Ontario Winter: A money saver

Ontario winters are one of the worst in the whole country (but better than Saskatchewan). Of course, when winter is here we hate it, but when it’s gone, we crave for the cold breeze to chill us down during hot days. Vancouver had a great winter this year; it was like a cold spring. But, I’ve been looking at this all wrong. I should be grateful for this winter. If you think about it, it can save you money.

Forget going to the Blue Mountain Resort here in Ontario, or flying out West to Whistler, BC. Why waste all that money, when you can gather your gear and hit the slopes at your nearest plaza parking lots? Snow ploughs love to accumulate the snow behind your favourite grocery market, Canadian Tire, or perhaps a mall! Why wouldn’t you climb these parking lot hills, and enjoy the view of people: during their smoke breaks, while carrying more groceries than they can handle. or cab drivers taking a nap? If you wouldn’t choose this lifestyle, then you need to re-think your priorities!

Everyone knows ice cream goes on sale during winter. This is the perfect time to stock up on lots of ice cream. But, where would you store it all? Yes, your freezer, but you wouldn’t be able to fit everything in it. So where else can you put the ice cream? Well, the toilet seat wouldn’t work guys, that’s gross. How about you in your own organic freezer? Yes, you can store the ice cream in your very own backyard! It’s the biggest freezer you will ever have until the end of winter – and if you are in Ontario, until the middle of spring.

So, we got a mini winter vacation taken care of, food locations, now what else can you save money on? Why,a shower! This is the perfect way to say good-bye to an amazing winter. When the temperatures go up – which feels like Christmas time (thanks winter, you never fail to provide!) – the snow begins to melt, and some of it will slowly form puddles on the side of the roads. Want a free shower? Walk on the sidewalk during rush hour, and you will be splashed by ignorant drivers who speed up, because why would they be concerned about YOUR life, when their frickin’ chicken is getting cold in their house?

Isn’t Mother Winter lovely? I am crying writing this beautiful homage to this wonderful season.

Fellow Eastern Canadians, are we in Spring or not?

I’m just confused. Please, clarify this for me. Am I going crazy?

I feel like I’ve been through a time warp and back in winter. I woke up this morning, happy, confident, energetic, ready to wear my runners once again, only to find a fresh coat of snow in the front yard. Please, tell me we won’t be getting more snow! It’s been a very long winter and as much as I love building snowmen and falling on my bum on the slippery sidewalks, I do want to feel the sun shine on my face, I want to wear sunblock, I want to go to the store without wearing 10 layers underneath. I hope we don’t have such a terrible winter next time 😦

Mother Nature, please get the memo. Spring = flowers, sun, a bit of rain, dresses, NOT snow and freezing temperatures.

*singing* Winter, winter, go away, don’t come back another day

Random Photo of the Day #5…with a Story Starter!

Hi everyone! I hope you’re all doing well. I’m stuck indoors, because we have a freezing rain warning (Ontario is still stuck in Winter). So, it’s time for another random photo!

I starter a new blog posts series today, so if you want to check it out, here it is: Through the eyes of my childhood

This photo was taken in Vancouver, BC, in 2010. It was the year of the Winter Olympics and I was living there then. Honestly, it was such a great time for the city! Lots of events, lots of athletes, and of course the Olympic cauldron. I witnessed the Olympic torch being carried throughout the city, met Walter Gretzky (hockey fans know who he is), and ice skater Patrick Chan (who won silver at Sochi). Overall, it was good times!

Story Starter: The incandescent fire was felt through their hands, as they sat by fire not only for warmth, but to light their damaged hearts…

Of course! The world sort of rules me today (freezing rain)!

Icy Roads, Icy Sidewalks – Ice Sheets of DOOM

Canada and parts of the U.S. are under an ice Apocalypse! Yes, I get it. It IS cold, but seriously, this is WINTER. Winter=cold. Winter is awesome! Are you telling me you don’t like it when, your furnace breaks and you have to sleep without heat for one night, and it is -14 C outside? Or seeing cars coming to life and putting on an ice skating show on the roads? It is free to watch. It’s like Survivor, but with clothing and more betrayal. Oh, and the BEST PART, when the temperature rises, it rains, and then Mother Nature decides to PMS on us and makes the temperature drop again, thus gifting us with free ice rinks for us to enjoy. You know, because in Canada, we don’t have enough ice rinks ;). Oh and that’s not all. Mother Nature gives you the silent treatment, and you are oblivious to what is happening out there. Yes, sure, you can always use common sense, but that isn’t useful when pre-menopausal Nature strikes at random times.

Earthlings: Let’s pour salt!

Mother Nature: Sure, but I’ll freeze it before it fully melts!

Earthlings: We’ll use machines. We’ll shovel!

Mother Nature: Freezing Rain!

Earthlings: At least send us a fresh coat of a 5 cm snowfall!

Mother Nature: 50 cm you say?

Earthlings: You suck

Mother Nature: Wind Chill Warning. High Speed Wind Warning!

Of course! The world still rules me.

PS: I wonder what penguins think about this? “Human World Problems”?
