Netflix: Your nagging conscience

I love Netflix. I do get a lot for what I pay for each month. Thanks to it, the word ‘sleep’ has disappeared from my vocabulary. Netflix is a nagging little conscience that just won’t quit until it sees you binging on your favourite TV Shows or Movies, regardless of whether your eyes are red and shutting down, or you are alert and awake. If you have Netflix (like me) you’re probably craving a long and proper sleep. Here’s a reminder of what that’s like:

http://reactiongifs.com/?p=19660

-Netflix makes you like movies you never thought you would. Your quality senses usually decrease at night, when you decide to watch a movie, because it has become part of your routine.

-Netflix is your lullaby. There are times when your favourite TV show or movie become your bed time story. Because sleeping on your own terms has become your weakness, and you must listen to your favourite plots in order to regain your sleepiness. You know, because how dare one go to sleep without listening to Rose cry as she realizes Jack has officially gained his wings (Titanic).

-Netflix is good for your budget. Ever had those sudden cravings or a scheduled trip to the supermarket? Forget it. Netflix will remind you not to go because your favourite scene is about to play. Sometimes, you’ll find yourself grabbing a plate of fruit, instead of going to the store to buy a box of ice cream cones, because yes the movie is THAT good.

-Netflix has somewhat increase your reputation. The staff at your local library will believe you when you tell them you’re thinking of checking out books and that you’ll actually read them.

-Netflix has changed the way you watch TV. On the rare occasion you decide to check your cable channels, commercials will drive you insane to the point of no return. You now have zero patience.

-Friends? What friends? Oh, you mean the ones you converted into loving Netflix and are staying home chatting with you when you could be hanging out? Oh yes, I remember.

-Netflix has made you movie greedy. How dare Netflix charge you so much per month and not have every movie in existence? After all, you have sacrificed part of your monthly clothing budget to pay for it. Yes, very first world problem.

-Netflix has made you forgiving. It may not have all the movies, but it only takes one TV show or movie that takes you down childhood memory lane for you to trust it again.

 -Netflix: You have a paper? How about a long movie?

-Netflix: Homework? How about a career change? Watch movies and become a movie critic.

http://reactiongifs.com/?p=13833

Netflix is awesome, though. It does kill boredom :p, and I can relive the good old memories by watching some of my favourite movies and TV shows, without commercials and whenever I want. It feels good having a bit of control despite the hectic work schedule! Hey, if your favourite dance scene comes out, you can dance to it without making a fool of yourself :p (well, that is until you do decide to show this dance to your friends and end up making a fool of yourself).

Ellie’s Question Corner: What’s your favourite movie snack?

When you’re at the movies or sitting at home, what do you like to eat while watching your favourite movie? Is it always popcorn? Do you get different cravings?

I mostly like popcorn, corn chips with hot salsa (must be hot or medium), mint chocolate chip ice cream, and sometimes I get this broccoli craving (with or without cheese). I’m not into popcorn with butter as much, but I’ll still eat it if there’s no other choice.

How about you?

Home – A to Z Challenge

A to Z Challenge letter for today: H

Home

What is home? Baby don’t hurt me, don’t hurt me, no …wait, wrong song! But, yes I do want to talk about this. What is home? It is hard to see during hardships, but it is always there and we often find our way after we drift away. The beauty of this question is that there is no correct and definitive answer, because we all have different views on what home means to us. It doesn’t necessarily mean that home is one thing during a specific time and place, it is whatever we want it to be. I love tea, and after a long day at work home is sitting in front of my laptop, drinking tea, and catching up with everything. Other days, however, I find my home inside the bed sheets while I watch my favourite movies, or I feel comfort just munching on popcorn while I watch Charmed. How about Photography? Of course, that can be home, as well. Painting my nails, doing my hair, talking on the phone, writing on here, my home is universal.

When we feel down, we seek to do the things that cheer us up, and that is home. There are no boundaries to what makes us feel at home, and no one can take it away from us, nor should we let anyone do so. All of us here have something in common, we call WordPress our home; we feel at home because we love to write and inspire. Let yourself be lost in your own serenity and always appreciate the fact you have a home, literally everywhere. Home is where you feel safe, where you feel comfort, and where you forget your troubles. Always remember not to choose the path of self-destruction, because once you get lost in it, it will be hard (never impossible) to find your way back home.

My very first 2 blog nominations!

The very awesome and kind Jenni has nominated for 2 blog awards. I am extremely humbled and grateful for these nominations, Jenni! She makes me laugh with her posts and is a very inspiring blogger. Pay her a visit, you won’t regret it :). Here are the two awards I’ve been nominated for:

Image

The One Lovely Blog Award by belsbror

Image

The Dragon Loyalty award by markbialczak

I’d like to thank Jenni, of course, and the creators of these awards :). It is my first time doing this, so I hope I wrote this post correctly :p. Before I post my nominees, I must provide 7 random facts about myself. Ready?

1) I cannot write without Enya’s music playing in the background.

2) I watch the movies Lord of the Rings, Titanic and Jurrasic Park at least once a month.

3) I cannot live without tea.

4) I came up with the name for my main character (in the book I’m writing) while in the bathroom.

5) I masterminded a plan to run from home and sort of succeeded at the age of 2 (mum caught me before I could cross the street! Poor mum!)

6) One night while babysitting, the family’s cat brought in a LIVE mouse. I had to chase the cat, then grabbed him and threw him (gently) outside. They still tell the story to everyone :p. It was a funny experience.

7) When I was younger, I wrote my diaries using a fantasy format. I did this in case anyone ever read them :p. So, a trip to the bakery would be disguised as a detective story.

~~~
Now, onto the nominations! But before I write them, I’d also like to thank Robert Downey Jr and Leonardo DiCaprio for helping me…okay, fine, I’ll stop daydreaming :p
I would like to nominate the following blogs to the 2 awards. I wish I could nominate all, but can only do up to 10…so I’ll nominate 11 :p. I’m  going to play rule-breaker for today :p. These bloggers have been very kind to me!
Daily Prompt: Singing the Blues
http://dailypost.wordpress.com/2014/03/28/prompt-singing-the-blues/
Overall, I’m a happy person, even when I don’t want to admit it. It is not always easy for me to find a solution when I start singing the blues. But, first of all, I can’t sing, so I know it’s all metaphorical, but that’s already set me up for failure :p. It depends a lot on why such sadness was sung. If it’s because of my “day of the month,” and want to defeat the cramp demon, I just take a pain reliever and watch movies all day, and if I have to work, then I just go to work and suck it up.
That seems fairly simple, right? But, how about when sudden sadness kicks it? Yes, I do visit Robery Downey Jr.’s facebook page and drool at all his greatness, while I rock back and forth drinking tea, shedding tears of joy and pain all at the same time. That’s when my body decides to join in my frustration, and releases a war of a thousand cravings simultaneously stabbing me until I take charge. I binge on ice cream and potato chips, and if I didn’t hate myself enough at that moment, sometimes I go and buy a burger. You’d think that would help. Wrong. The next day I feel guilty for eating all the junk and become sad that I now have to workout a bit more than usual. But, then again, working out helps, right? Yes, unless your muscles are sore, because the food guilty made you try an intense class you haven’t done in a while. You get the idea, it’s a whole fire that you can never put out.
My solution now, is just to keep it simple and live with no regrets, as a method of avoiding singing the blues. If I feel like eating popcorn, I go and make popcorn and not worry whether it’s too early or too late to eat it. Basically, live your life in moderation and without hurting yourself and others. If you feel like going for a walk, then go for a walk. So what if it’s rainning? If it’s warm enough, get an umbrella and a jacket and go out. If you don’t have the right gear, go out anyway, let the rain fall on you and run back home and take a shower. I’ve lived in Vancouver, I know all about rain.
It’s about remembering how to enjoy life again. I listen to Enya when I write and when I feel down. I watch Lord of the Rings for inspiration. I read when I want to vent anger, because a lot of times you’ll look at other characters’ lives who have it a lot worse than you. Even if I don’t want to read, I grab the book and place it on my face. Be clumsy, be silly, be content. If it means hugging your stuffed animals, then go for it. I pray when I feel cheerful and hopeless, and if you don’t, that’s totally fine, but it works for me. Hey, even my Faith struggles at times and I don’t feel like acknowledging the guy up there. But, this is me. I can’t tell you how to live your life or give you a manual on how to overcome your own sadness.
My advice is do not prepare to be sad or for when you’ll become sad. Live your life right now, the way it feels right for you; laugh with friends, love everyone, go for the hike you’ve always wanted to do, eat that chocolate cake without feeling guilty (you know you want to). Live to the fullest so that you can remind yourself of the beauty in your life, when you feel sad. Everyday, life will bring different challenges and worries, and nothing will ever prepare you for them. I do so many things to cheer myself up, I have lost count. You grow everyday and you’ll deal with struggles in a different way. But, you have people who love you and it is important that you see this.
Bonus: I like to draw hearts a lot <3, and that cheers me up. Every status on my FB starts and ends with 3 hearts.
Daily prompt: Moments to Remember
Here’s the daily prompt for today: Moments to Remember
I sure have a lot of memories! One of the best memories is of my birthday present last year. My sister went above and beyond to get me an autograph of Sean Astin (he played Sam in the LOTR movies)…as well as a birthday video greeting from him!!!! Somehow, she managed to keep it a surprise from me – usually, I know what she’s up to. But, I was in shock and screaming all over the place when she gave me those presents! I will forever treasure those moments. It was also VERY nice of him to record the video. It goes to show you that he really is a good-hearted fellow – well, he was in the fellowship of the ring haha.
It may be a short memory, but it is the intention behind it that makes it special.
The process of cleaning your room – or trying to.
I wrote a while ago about the process of killing spiders, and cleaning my room is pretty much the same. Well, not ALL the time, but today IS one of those days.
I always decide to clean my room during the worst times; when I have nothing to do, and therefore, there isn’t a limit on whatever task I choose to do. The best time to clean your room is not when you have nothing else to do, because once you decide to clean, your brain will tell you to do something else. I can’t be the only one who goes through this, right?
1) What you plan to do: Organize clothes.
What you end up doing: You tell yourself everything is dirty, and throw it in the hamper.
~
2) What you plan to do: Hang your purses in one spot.
What you end up doing: What music should I put on?
~
3) What you plan to do: Organize stuffed animals.
What you end up doing: You really wanna watch Lord of the Rings. Okay, you won’t watch it, but you’ll let it play in the background.
~
4) What you plan to do: Vacuum
What you end up doing: You can’t hear what Legolas is saying, so you decide it’s best turn this vacuum off.
~
5) What you plan to do: Go back to vacuuming.
What you end up doing: the movie is getting good.
~
=3 hours later=
~
6) What you plan to do: Forgive yourself from wasting 3 hours watching a movie you’ve seen a hundred times.
What you end up doing: You eat chocolate
~
7) What you plan to do: Finish cleaning once and for all.
What you end up doing: Find family or friends to Skype with.
~
8) What you plan to do: Whoever you were on Skype with, tells you to back to cleaning.
What you end up doing: You actually finish cleaning.
~
I did finish cleaning :). In my defence, I’ve been away on vacation for 3 weeks!I have to be honest, trying to find space for my stuffed animals wasn’t easy. My giant penguin has its own desk chair (I’m not kidding).
You can tell my favourite animal is the magnificent, penguin (Seriously, everyone gets me penguins for my birthday now)
Of course! The world sort of rules me today!
Happy Oscars Day!!!!!!
I haven’t missed the Oscars since I was little. It is a show I can watch, where I know I won’t see half-naked and/or naked women disrespecting themselves on television. It’s been a pleasure (no pun intended) to enjoy the great hosting skills of Ellen DeGeneres for the past 2 years. Not only does she bring charisma and laughs, but she embraces viewers and makes them feel welcome into the awards. Who else brings pizza in the middle of an award show? It’s PIZZA! PIZZA! PIZZA! Of course, it would’ve been nice, if she were to send all of us at home a free one. But, not only did she bring food, she also managed to take an awesome selfie to post on twitter! I would’ve love for Robert Downey Jr and Leonardo DiCaprio to be in it, but I guess I can’t be too greedy.
Speaking of Leonardo DiCaprio — king player of the supermodels — I was saddened when he didn’t win the Oscar; however, I do think Matthew McConaughey deserved to win. Well, sort of, I haven’t really seen ‘Dallas Buyers Club’, but I’ve seen clips from the movie. It looked like he put a lot of emotion into his character. I didn’t recognize him when I first saw the trailer. His character really came to life, in the clips. Which is why, I’d like to see the entire movie. As for Mr. Jack Dawson, I’d rather him win for another role. I’m sure he will one day. He’s a naturally talented actor, who effortlessly portrays the true initiatives of each of his characters. You don’t see many actors, who are able to make their characters seem realistic.
Congrats to ’12 years a slave’ for winning Best Picture, Best Supporting Actress, and Best Adapted Screenplay. It’s good to see that this movie got the recognition it deserved. Which brings me to tonight’s disappointment, Gravity. I don’t want to completely destroy this movie with my opinion, because the whole movie is not bad or disastrous, but it is not the superb movie it was made out to be. The effects and sound were great, and I’ll give credit to the director, because making a movie is always hard work. However, in terms of plot and message — that is if you compare it to other nominated movies — it lacked substance. I do believe it is overrated, and unless they actually went into space to film, the Academy should’ve given more credit to other movies. In my opinion, there was too much hype. Sandra Bullock is a very good actress, but this movie didn’t reflect on her true talent, shown in her past movies.
Let’s move on to Animation. Frozen took home two Oscars; one for Best Animated Film, and the other for Best Original Song (Let it Go). I couldn’t be happier. This is a very good movie for the entire family; especially, sisters. It has a simple message, which is love conquers all.
Overall, this was a good show. I think Ellen DeGeneres did not disappoint as a host, and should be a permanent host for the Oscars. Even though, there were wins/losses I didn’t agree with, I still feel it mostly recognized true talent and hard work. I do wish it had more performances. I know the awards are already long, but I would love to see a bit more artistic expression. They can always cut the Red Carpet walk a bit short, right? :p
Let’s hope this year brings more talent, great movies, and an Oscar-winning performance for Mr. DiCaprio! He does deserve to win an Oscar, already!
Of course! The world doesn’t rule me today!
Some of my favourite apps
“What? Just ‘some’? You’re a tease.” Yup, I am :D. Here are SOME of my favourite apps. Feel free (they’re literally free) to give them a try! But do so at your own risk. If you end up regretting it, it’s not my fault ;). You can download them on the App Store (Apple) by doing a search and installing.
Social Media:
1) Facebook (now it’s easier to stalk your friends): You can choose to save your password if you want. It’s simple to use and navigate. It’s also convenient if you don’t want to bring your laptop to your bed. I’ve had it for months now and have only experienced minor problems. For example, there have been times when the News Feed wouldn’t load, but a restart of the app would fix it.
2) Pinterest (a.k.a the app you forget you have): I recently created an account on Pinterest and I like it. I’m not sure I’m in love with it,because I forget I have an account all the time. I can see myself using it a lot, whenever I get in a fight with my laptop, though. I’m going to say one thing, it is awesome to have when you need your quick daily dose of Robert Downey Jr and Leonardo DiCaprio.
Language:
1) Duolingo (learning a new language is hard, and so is remembering this name!): I LOVE this app. It is a FREE tool where you can learn a new language. It is a lot of fun, you basically get so into it, you forget you’re learning. I’m learning French now, because I’d like to buy their amazing wine while speaking french, and its grammar is similar to Spanish (I’m fluent). You can also use your built-in microphone for some of the exercises. It’s great practice before you take your skills out in the real world, so you don’t make a fool of myself with the pronunciation. It won’t let you pass if you mispronounce. Hopefully, I will learn fast, or else my French ancestors will come to haunt me.
Games:
1) The Hobbit: Kingdoms of Middle-Earth: Wait, you thought I was going to say ‘Angry Birds’? Yes, I play the game, but it’s not a game I love (this is a list of MY favourite apps, after all). The Hobbit, however, is so amazing, it’s going to be my Valentine’s Day date! That’s how much I love it. It’s a world where you create your own cities, battle orcs (basically retail customers, but more stinky), and gain virtual rewards. I only have one city, but I’m building my own army! It’s great to pass the time, and very addicting. It is free, but if you want to speed things up, you can purchase ‘Mithril’ with REAL money. I don’t buy Mithril, I need to buy real food to live.
Health:
1) 7-minute workout (when it’s too cold to go to the gym): Snowstorm hits! Oh my goodness, how am I going to get to the gym?  Well, you won’t. You’ll use this app to replace your time at the gym (don’t fully replace it, remember you paid for your gym membership). It’s an awesome way to keep active inside your home, when the ice apocalypse prevents you from leaving it. You can do 1 or up to 5 circuits. It’s only 7 minutes! Anyone can do it. I even use it while I watch movies!
2) Nike Training and Running (when 7 minutes is too easy): They’re 2 separate apps, but it is great when you want to challenge yourself. You can download awesome 30-minute workouts. They also have videos linked to it, explaining the different moves. No more excuses! And this is coming from me, the queen of “how am I supposed to workout if I can’t even get to the gym?”
3) Sleep Cycle (a slow way to interrupt your dream with Leo DiCaprio): It’s a smart alarm that stalks you during the night, and determines (by your movements) when it’s a good time to wake up. It is an awesome app. I feel well rested after I wake up. You can even use nature sounds to fall asleep, and your own music to wake up to (pick Enya!). You can change the time phases, too. The most recommended one is 30 minutes. It means, the app will pick the best time to wake you up, within the time to set the alarm. Ever since I’ve used it, I’ve been able to say goodbye to Iron Man during our battle to save the world (he knows now when I’m about to wake up). It’s like Inception, but with your own cliffhanger.
4) Lumosity (your brain wants to be fit, don’t ignore it): This is also one of the apps I’ve recently added. It basically trains your brain using different mind games. You can play on your computer, as well. It is free, but if you want more features, you can buy a membership. I’m getting so much better at the games, it’s incredible! Whether it will work in the long run, I’m not sure, but I’ll let you know!
Movies:
1) Netflix (because TV sucks): No commercials, lots of shows and movies, you can pause and resume whenever you want. That’s it.
Writing:
1) Dictionary.com app (for brain farts/tantrums): Easy access to thousands of words. For an extra charge, you can upgrade to more dictionaries (they gotta make a profit somewhere)
2) WordPress: he he he
250744_10150928604318480_677399575_n^^^ Here’s a picture of a penguin trying to hypnotize you.
Of course! The world doesn’t rule me today!
Desertion of Reality
There are many ways I choose to escape from reality, as well as many reasons. My constant desire to detach from the norm doesn’t mean I don’t want to be part of this life. It’s just a different route I can take and if I choose, I can merge it with my reality.
Most of the times, my preference in movies and music do not coincide with others’. But, I guess that is kind of the point of escaping reality (unless I want to escape with someone). I can drink peppermint tea and watch an Audrey Hepburn movie, and be happy for the rest of the day. I can simply write while listening to Enya, suffer withdrawal as soon as I stop listening to her songs, and still be happy (I can always turn the music on again :p).
One of my favourite things to do is take photos, and pretend they’re a different world. It’s nice to dream about different places, where you can experience lots of adventures. It makes life more interesting.
I’ll share this photo I took a while ago. I decided to cut most of the house, and take a picture of the trees and the sun. There is something that enlightens my surroundings, when I imagine I’m somewhere else. It’s nice to take a moment to appreciate the good that is left in this world.
sunset 005
I’m not saying I’m a happy little bunny all the time, not capable of sadness. I just like to make my own happiness sometimes :).
Of course! The world doesn’t rule me today 🙂
